How to Take Care of Your Gums

Your gums are just as important as your teeth, which is why it’s vital to take great care of them. To help you do so, our Atkinson Family Dentistry team recommends that you do the following things on a regular basis:

-Brush: Brush your teeth every morning and every night with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brushing will help you remove plaque and harmful substances that irritate and harm your gums. Make sure to wait 30 minutes after you eat to brush, and make sure to thoroughly brush each tooth.

-Floss: Flossing once a day will help remove the harmful particles that live between your teeth. This will help your gums stay healthy and strong, and the chances of your gums becoming irritated or swollen are reduced. As you floss, please be careful along the gumline so you don’t harm the oral tissues.

-Rinse: Rinse your mouth daily with antibacterial mouthwash. Rinsing will help complete the cleaning job and remove the plaque that creates early gum disease. When you rinse, swish for 30 to 60 seconds and follow the instructions on the bottle.

-Visit the dentist: It’s vital that you visit your dentist every six months if you want the best gums possible. Your six month checkups include the only treatment that can completely remove the plaque from your smile and protect your gums from gum disease. So, please keep up with your appointments.
